The major in English consists of a common core and three tracks. The core provides background for more advanced courses, with offerings in English literature, American literature, noncanonical literature, as well as analysis of particular genres, literary theory, and introduction to linguistics.
The Literature Track offers courses focused on particular themes, genres, authors, topics, and periods. The Creative Writing Track gives students the opportunity to do extensive, sequenced work in poetry or fiction writing and exposes them to the writing of other genres. The Linguistics Track enables students to understand human language in its many facets; its history, its structure, its variation, its relationship with society and culture, and how it is acquired by children and adults.
